G.E.N.A. Convention Auction Most Successful Ever

For a two-man operation, the firm of Johnson & Jensen conducted a 1806- lot auction at the Great Eastern Numis- matic Association convention in New York City, September 25 28, 1980.

The sale realized in excess of $60,000.

The vinprecedented sale contained the largest number of medals ever offered at one time at public auction in America. Of the total number, 972 lots were called and all were sold (with exception of 4 lots withdrawn for cataloging errors). The remaining 806 lots were offered at mail bid sale only.

Over 600 people participated in the sale, either by mail bid or by attending the sale in person. The sale was held on the final day of the four -day coin convention. A prominent numismatic firm, Kagins of Iowa, had conducted a two- session coin auction earlier.

Providing something for everyone was certainly the factor to the success of this medal auction. Among the 1800 lots were pieces from over one hundred specialties, including, of course, the bicentennial section part 2 of the Robert D. Young Bicentennial Collec- tion— Americana, exposition, U. S.

Mint, Washington, Lincoln and other presidential medals.

Olympic and sports medals were included, as were world medals, naval, decorations among other topics. The variety was so vast that an index, of over 200 entries, was included for the first time in a J & J auction catalog.

The catalog was printed in August and first delivery was made at the national ANA convention in Cincinnati. Among the first bidders were foreign collectors, marking an international

aspect to the sale and further evidence of the world- wide importance of medal collecting.

Some notable examples from the sale are the following;

The Colorado Centennial-Bicentennia] Medal struck at the Denver Mint in gold realized $1250 against an estimate of $800 to $1000 (lot 3).

Two early U.S, Mint medals were among the most eagerly examined lota Lot 209 (Jtilian MI- 3) Anthony Wayne Medal brought $425 against a top esti- mate of $190. The following lot (210) the Daniel Morgan Medal (Julian MI- 7) brought the same $425 bid. Both pieces were pristine examples.

Another U.S. Mint medal, Julian NA-26 (lot 214) brought $475. This was the 4 -inch Duncan Ingraham Medal.

The American Indian Peace Medal (lot 198) brought $750. It was a finely made replica made after I860. It was purchased by a collector of American Indian material.

A United States Assay Medal of 1902 brought $350 (lot 222).

The Washington Inaugural Centennial Medal of 1889 (lot 281) brought $145.

This is interesting since this piece was priced at under $100 less than a year ago. It was created by A. Saint-Gaudens and is, perhaps, the least expensive item obtainable by this artist.

New Jersey Collector Responds To Sale Notice

For collectors whose mail bids are unsuccessful at any of our auction sales we send a post card (illustrated page 2) notifying them of such. In creating the card we selected for an illustration a medal with a man holding a book.

The medal bears a 17th century gentleman and we couldn't resist the tempt- ation of writing the copy as if he were talking. (continued following page)

bav* cb«cked and double checked our bid book and musk report. Sire, that none of your bids in our recent auction sale were successful. We pray, Sire, that your future bids will be more bountiful and that we may

post to you a more joyful dispatch.

Johnson &c Jensen

Following our last auction we received a curious reply from a New Jersey collector who wrote in the same vein:

"How pittyf^ull the dispatch which arrived by postman this week. Pray dear Sires that only utter penury neighbour- ing on sheer poverty prevented me from submitting higher and more bountiful bids.

"No doubt some richer knave acquired the pieces for which my heart desired. Alas! I must be consoled with what I have already.

"Pray dear Sires, wouldst thou tell me how bountiful others have paid for the following treasurers? . . . Looking forward to your joyful epistle. I wish to remain Yours Faithfully." M.A.

We certainly provided the data our correspondent re- quested; but this time we wrote in 20th century English !

Much of the pleasure of medal collecting is the search for information after one acquires a medal. Recently we heard from a collector who obtained a medal from our March auction sale (lot 321, Instituto de las Espanas Medal, 1922).

"The female bust on the obverse was unearthed early this century at a site of a temple in Elche, near Alicante Spain. It is believed the bust was carved in the 4th or 5th century BC and shows strong Greek influence, possibly from the early Greek settlers in the area.

"Called La Dama de Elche, the bust is stone, 22 inches tall, and is presently in the Prado Musevtm in Madrid. Many Americans viewed this bust while it was on exhibit at the Spanish Pavilion during the 1965 New York World's Fair.

"The gentleman on the reverse wears the garb of a l6th or 17th century Spanish male of means with an unmistakable resemblance to Miguel De Cervantes (and is quite similar to a Cervantes painting in the Real Academia Espanola, Madrid).

"The ship in Miguel's hand, a typical caravel of the era, is most likely not the Santa Maria. No known authentic pic- ture of the Santa Maria exists, but research indicates the mainmast of Columbus' flagship carried one large sqviare- rlgged sail, in contrast to the two mainmast sails shown on the medal.

"There is an excellent photo of La Dama de Elche in McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of World Art (IX:409). The fol- lowing book illustrates both Dama and the Cervantes paint- ing: Diego Martin, La Civilizacion Espanola (196l:l6)."

STANDARD WORK JUST REISSUED!

The Medals of Karl Goetz by Gunter W. Kienast

For satirical medals sculptor Karl Goetz is the unquestioned master. His lifelong production of 636 medals, plaques and medalets— particularly during the turbulent post WWI Germany period— were described and il- lustrated in a magnus opus published in 1967. For a standard work of such numismatic importance, collectors have paid well over $100 per copy once this work went out-of-print. Now a second printing has been issued (with a handful of minor errors corrected). Brown cloth, gold tooled. Fine paper. Over 170 pages of illustrations!

The age of Aquarius is the age of the specialist.

Time was once when numismatists were generalists and covered all aspects of the numismatic field.

Not any more. Now it’s the dawning of the age of the specialist.

Where specialized knowledge and experience are required, we are specialists in medals. Not antiques and medals. Or tokens and medals. Or coins and medals. But medals alone. We know the medallic field: medals for their beauty, their history, their value. And their interest to collectors.

Johnson and Jensen, two medal special- ists, joined forces in 1977; combined to offer over 45 years experience in numis- matics. Knowledge gleaned from over four decades of fervent collecting and from an ever-growing numismatic library.

Experience gained from over ten years association with one of America’s leading medal manufac- turers. Hands-on experi- ence and hard-earned specialized knowledge.

Unmatched credentials.

Today numismatics is on the threshold of an exciting era and medals will play a vital part in the new excitement. We will have a part in the new era and invite you to be a part also. How may we help you?

American Indian Peace Medal

198. George Washington Indian Peace Medal, 1792 (made after 1860; 5-inch (12.57 x 8.14cm) silver oval. Medal is hand engraved with Washington on right; Red Jacket on left smoking peace pipe, with plowing scene in background. Below in exergue, in caps & small caps, “George Washing- ton President 1 792” with circle around date. Below is English hallmark similar to W&P Cunningham of Edin- burgh Scotland (in use since 1780). On rev is eagle in very early form of U.S. seal; below iS very light “AS’ initials. The hand which engraved the rev used heavier strokes than obv, leading us to believe two separate individuals en- graved this piece.

This medal is similar to Belden 4C, plate 5, and Prucha plate 34 (page 87). It is the third size there are two sizes larger for more inportant Indian chiefs. It bears a rim of a

separate’piece of silver and an overlapping loop. The rim is machine made and differs from contemporary Indian Peace Medals, which were hand drawn. Thus, we believe this piece was not made in the 1 700s, but probably after I860, when such machinery was certainly available.

It is unknown today the maker(s) intent, nor his or their authority to produce this piece. We offer this piece for exactly what it is: an exceptionally well executed imitation, a study specimen of fine quality and workmanship of a famous American medal.

It is certainly not to be considered in the same class as originals, which would bring five figures (see forthcoming Garrett sale) but this is a replica for someone who may not be fortunate to obtain such an original. We conservatively estimate this piece at $1,500-2,000
